This First Edition on Van Gelder Paper consists of 925 Copies.

Van Gelder Zonen were a prominent Dutch papermaking company, established in 1685, and closed in 1981.The paper’s laid texture had visible chain lines, typical of artisanal production, and was considered ideal for fine art prints like aquatint etchings, letterpress, screen prints etc.

Thomson's most famous literary work, the poem The City of Dreadful Night, was composed from January 1870 to October 1873. It was first published in serial form in the National Reformer in the spring of 1874. The poem was reprinted in The City of Dreadful Night and Other Poems (1880) and elicited encouraging and complimentary reviews from a number of critics.

CONDITION:

The paper binding has yellowed/discoloured with age. Some mild staining, spine sunned/darkened. Floral title to front board, title and date on spine. Both boards have a 1cm yapp overhang, protecting the text block fore edge. All edges rough cut, wavy edged. Both paste downs have a visible paper water mark of the papermaker Van Gelder Zonen. Booksellers pencil inscription noting ltd to 950 copies. Overall text block binding good, firm and complete. One detached ribbon page marker, appears to have remained in situ for quite some time, leaving a discoloured strip beneath. The contents remains in great condition, perfectly legible and in crisp clean type. No other previous owner inscriptions, highlighting or notes.

Overall the book remains in good reading condition, having some typical signs of age. A good quality edition on excellent paper, quite scarce. A wonderful edition for any Poetry lover.

The book measures 10.5cm x 18cm.
