First series has a tissue guarded frontispiece portrait of the author.

Book cover design by Gleeson White, an accomplished designer, in 1895 becoming a member of the Art Workers’ Guild. His principal work was book art, divided between book-plates, decorative end-papers and book-covers. His bindings, always in cloth or paper, were mostly published by the art-specialists George Bell and are mainly in the style of Arts and Crafts while occasionally reflecting the impact of Art Nouveau. This work sits between the two idioms, a prime example of the influence of competing styles in the final years of the nineteenth century.

Both books measure 11cm x 17cm, with the first series being slightly thicker than the second.

There are signs of age, use and wear. Both volumes have cover discolouration, staining, and markings. Corners bumped, head and tail of spines a little dented. Gilt title and floral design remains bright, although darkened in parts due to overall age/handling discolouration. Top edge gilt, generally bright with mild fading, other edges rough cut. 

Bindings firm, boards holding well. Contents generally clean and bright, some mild toning, mainly front and rear first few pages. No previous owner inscriptions. 

Overall an attractive set, hard to find complete. Despite cover discolouration they remain a lovely example of late 19th century cloth binding.
