First Edition published 1898 by John Lane, The Bodley Head, London and New York.

“Barrington Macgregor” is a pseudonym for the Rev. Alexander Barrington Orr (1846-1910), minister in the Episcopal Church, who in the 1890s was minister of the church of St. Palladius, Drumtochty, Auchenblae.

Charles Robinson was a prolific and much loved book illustrator. He illustrated over one hundred books, including classics such as Child's Garden of Verses, Alice in Wonderland, Aesop's Fables, Secret Garden, fairy tales by Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm, Oscar Wilde.

CONDITION:

The book measures 16.5cm x 20cm, 2cm thick.

Original blue cloth binding in good condition. Boards have light shelf wear, rubbing and minor marks, with corners a little bumped. Spine a bit sunned, head and tail particularly shelfworn, rubbing away a small amount of the gilt decoration and title. Large gilt stamped title and decoration on upper board, gilding generally bright with very light rubbing. Rear board has a gilt stamped child figure sitting, condition matching upper board. Faint ink squiggle near the top edge of rear board. Joints holding very well with no splitting. End pages and paste downs toned and foxed. Attractive illustrated half title page. Text block generally age toned throughout. Very slight foxing, minor creasing. All text and illustrations legible and good. No previous owner inscriptions, highlighting or notes. Binding is strong, no loose or missing pages.

Overall the book remains in good reading condition, with typical signs of age, use and wear. A scarce edition, beautifully illustrated throughout.
