First edition of the first series of Elizabeth M. A. F. Saxby's charming children's short story collection, written with the aim of teaching children about science.

Elizabeth Mary Ann Fea Saxby was an English author who wrote several fictional and educational works aimed at young adults. This collection of tales, as with much of her work, incorporates scientific knowledge, reflecting her background as the daughter of a schoolmaster and amateur naturalist.

CONDITION:

Bound in the publisher's original blue cloth binding, with intricate gilt detailing to upper board. Gilt still bright, slightly rubbed in parts but generally good. Spine has darkened, gilt title and decoration dulled in comparison to upper board. Boards edges and corners are shelf worn and bumped, spine top and bottom edge rubbed. Joints holding firm with no splitting. All page edges gilt, still bright but with a few scuffs/scratches. Paste downs and end papers yellowed with age, along with some scattered foxing. Full page ink inscription on first blank end paper, 1st class commended reading prize, dated 1864. No further inscriptions, underlining, highlighting or notes. Contents is complete, no loose or missing pages. All illustrations present and in good condition. The tissue guards have darkened with age and have some foxing. Text block generally clean bright and legible, minor foxing in parts. Binding firm overall.

The book remains in good reading condition, attractive binding and interesting contents. A scarce edition.

The book measures 12.5cm x 16cm.
