A collection of folk-tales, fairy-lore, and stories of magic from Chinese history, it follows the idea that a "new" fairy-tale is usually just an old friend in disguise, with three or four directly birthed by the work of Chinese scholars. Titles include: The Fox-Maiden, The Enchanted Cave, and The Two Gifts, among others. Written by Constance Hagberg Wright, an English author and folklorist. The wife of Sir Charles Theodore Hagberg Wright, the secretary and librarian of the London Library, granddaughter of architect Henry Francis Lockwood, and half-sister of Priscilla Cecilia, Countess of Annesley. Illustrated by her daughter Dione Tyrrell Lewis who studied at Chelsea, Regent Street and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She exhibited in the second quarter of the 20th Century at several major galleries, including the Royal Academy.

The book measures approximately 20cm x 25cm, 2.5cm thick.

CONDITION:
Original grey full cloth binding showing marking/staining, with an overall "grubbiness" from age and use. Red patterned design, red title on spine. Some general minor shelf wear. Hinges/joints firm with no splitting. End papers and paste downs have matching design to cover. Text block a little age toned but generally clean, bright, minor spots of foxing. Binding firm and complete, no loose or missing pages. A couple of folded corners. Page edges a little marked. A couple of bookseller pencil marks on pastedowns, no further previous owner inscriptions.

Overall the book remains in good reading condition. The marked cover appears to be a common issue, affecting similar editions. Despite this the contents remains good, fascinating folk-tales alongside striking illustrations. Scarce first edition.
