Theres no print year, however Horace Hart is named as University Printer. His tenure ran between 1883-1915. A full page ink inscription written on a rear blank end paper is also dated 1914. The inscription name is illegible, but initials match the R. B. L. L. gilt stamped on the front board. This Book was given as a Baptism gift on January 4th 1914 by his Godmother. The inscription is written upside down at the rear, likely in error.
Bound by Orrin & Geer in maroon Morocco leather with Gilt decoration in attractive Art Nouveau's style.
The book measures 8.5cm x 13cm.
CONDITION:
The leather cover has some light surface marks and scratches. Corners a little bumped. Gilt line decoration remains bright. 5 raised bands on spine, with matching grid gilt tooling in the compartments. Gilt Floral leaf motif in each corner of both front and rear boards. Joints holding well, firm with no splitting. Some mild rubbing and shelf wear to the extremities.
Inner hinges strong, no splitting. Maroon marbled end pages. Gilt design continues around the pastedowns, corners bumped causing slight splitting of the corner floral motifs. Text block has age toned/yellowed slightly. Mild foxing mainly on the blank end pages. Small amount of corner folds and creasing. No further inscriptions or page marking, other than the inscription at the rear. Page edges are red under gold gilt, with the gilt dulled and scratched from age and use. Remants of a detatched ribbon page marker tucked into the gutter between pages 50-51.
Overall the book remains in good reading condition, with the typical signs of age, use and wear. Please scroll through each photo for the best understanding of condition.
