London: Philip Lee Warner. Publisher to the Medici Society Ltd: MCMIX. (1909) Of this Edition of The Song of Songs have been printed on handmade Riccardi Paper 500 copies; upon Vellum 17 copies 15 for sale. This PAPER copy No. 410.
The book measures 20.5cm x 27.5cm.
There are ten tipped-in colour plates including the frontispiece; each with a tissue guard. Quarter binding - tan/beige cloth with sky blue paper- covered boards. Untrimmed pages.Top edge gilt.
Some clear signs of age, use and wear. There is clear tanning, spotting, staining of both boards. The boards edges are well worn, rubbed through to the cardboard layer, corners bumped and showing similar significant shelf wear. The cloth spine significantly discoloured and frayed at both ends. Title label on spine, along with larger label on front board, both discoloured/yellowed. Some pin sized holes dotted about nearest the spine, travelling through the boards into blank end papers.
Internally, the contents are moderately tanned, with occasional foxing; more so on the end papers. The colour prints are largely unaffected, seemingly well protected by the tissue guards. All prints bar the frontispiece at the rear, following the Song of Solomon. No previous owner inscriptions, highlighting or notes. Binding is tight, firm and complete, with no loose or missing pages, all prints accounted for.
Overall the book remains in good reading condition. The poor state of the cover is unfortunate, however the contents remain good, with beautiful illustrations by Sir William Russell Flint, widely acclaimed as the finest watercolour artist of his time. A contender for a rebind project perhaps?
