Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post–Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication.

Please view all listing photographs for a clear understanding of the condition. There are signs of age, use and wear. The yellow/olive colour cover has noticeable surface wear, fading, rubbing and mild staining. Corners bumped and rubbed, head and tail of spine bumped, top edge particularly worn. Black title on upper board, maroon floral and animal decoration across all sides. Gilt title on spine is faded and rubbed. Joints holding well, no splitting of hinges or joints. Green end papers and paste downs very discoloured. Rear paste down has binder sticker on bottom edge, W Greening Binder 183 Fleet Street. Front end paper has a couple of previous owners ink inscriptions. Text block age toned throughout, yellowing and foxing sporadic. Frontispiece gutter delicate, tissue guard still present, although creased and foxed. Text block binding good, no loose or missing pages.

Overall the book remains in good reading condition, despite clear signs of age, use and wear.
