The Nazi New Order In Poland, By Jon Evans. 1941 Left Book Club Edition. Scarce.
Scarce Edition,
THE NAZI NEW ORDER IN POLAND.
By Jon Evans.
Published 1941 by Victor Gollancz Ltd, London. Left Book Club Edition, not for sale to the public.
The primary purpose of this book is to display a working model of the Nazi "New Order", which the Nazi propaganda machine is ceaselessly striving to persuade the world to be as desirable as it is inevitable.
Postscript inclusion states this book was completed and in type before the Nazi invasion of the U.S.S.R. began. A few paragraphs in it will therefore have dated before publication.
The Left Book Club was a publishing group that exerted a strong left-wing influence in Great Britain, during its initial run, from 1936 to 1948.
Pioneered by Victor Gollancz to oppose fascism and inequality, it offered a monthly book choice, for sale to members only, as well as a newsletter that acquired the status of a major political magazine. It also held an annual rally. Membership peaked at 57,000, but after the Soviet-Nazi non-aggression pact of 1939, it disowned its large Communist element, and subsequent years of paper-rationing, during and after the war, led to further decline. It ceased publishing in 1948.
The LBC was one of the first book clubs in the UK and, as such, played an important role in the evolution of the country's book trade.
Historian Michael Newman says:
Between 1936 and 1939, the LBC provided hope for thousands of people who were seeking a solution to the burning moral issues of the era. Despite its pro-Communist line, the Club's socialist propaganda and education probably ultimately strengthened the Labour Party and contributed to its victory in the postwar election.
The book contains parts on the Invasion and Partition, The Annexed Lands, The Core of the New Order, The Destruction of a Nation, and Poland Fights Back.
CONDITION:
The book measures 13cm x 19cm.
There are clear signs of age, use and wear. The red thin board cover is faded, spine sunned, surface marked, and shelf worn along the edges. Slight small amount of surface tearing along the spine hinges, exposing webbing beneath. Black title on spine and front board still striking. Boards still holding well, though gutter of front board hinge has surface cracking with webbing visible. Black Ink inscription 'Geo. H. H. Lloyd' on front paste down. Contents are significantly toned and foxed, however all contents remains perfectly legible. The final blank endpaper has a torn corner with loss, plus a margin tear with loss along top edge nearest the gutter. Neither affect text.
Overall the book remains in good reading condition. The book was printed during the Second World War when paper rationing was in place, hence the inevitable condition issues we see today. A scarce edition, due to its limited print run and low quality of materials used, leaving few in existence. An interesting read for those who collect World War 2 literature, those that have an interest in publishing history, or those interested in the U.K. political issues of the time.
