The first edition, first impression of this work. In the publisher's original price clipped dust jacket.

Inscribed by the author, Sir Vivian Fuchs, on a purpose made pasted in label 'Autographed Copy of The Crossing of Antarctica V. Fuchs'. This is glued in on the dedication page to Her Majesty The Queen, Patron of the Expedition.

Also included is a newspaper clipping from New Statesman, Nov.1 1958. It gives a detailed review of the book and the controversy between Sir Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary on the Expedition.

Illustrated with thirty full page coloured plates and sixty three full page plates in black and white of original photographs, with nine maps in text.

The book measures 15cm x 23cm, 4cm thick.

CONDITION:
In the publisher's original blue cloth binding, with price clipped dust jacket. The dust jacket has numerous open and closed tears. Archival tape repairs have been made across much of the surface, with the tape applied to the underside of the wrapper. Jacket is also discoloured, marked and stained. Spine darkened/sunned. Blue cloth binding rubbed at both ends of the spine, boards edges and corners also rubbed. Silver gilt title on spine remains bright. A few dots of staining on the upper board. Joints holding firm, no splitting. Internally, firmly bound, no loose or missing pages. Pages bright, some mild spotting to margins. Page edges foxed in parts, mostly affecting bottom edge. 

Overall the book remains in good reading condition. The dust wrapper is rough, but hanging on, could do with a mylar protective wrap. Contents is good with firm binding. A fascinating insight to the Expedition, first edition signed by Sir Vivian Fuchs, along with an interesting newspaper clipping!
