Ruby 32mo, Clarendon.
Bound in cream coloured plastic/bakelite boards, made to imitate Ivory or Bone. Pinned to the front board is a Cross made with Rolled Gold, with matching Rolled Gold corners pinned to the boards. Each section is engraved with "Rolled Gold."
Rolled gold is a hybrid material, consisting of a thin layer of gold that's mechanically bonded or heat-fused to one or both sides of a base metal (often brass or copper). The thickness of the gold layer can vary but is generally at least five percent of the total metal weight. Rolled gold saw a renewed surge of popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, especially in utilitarian objects such as watches and fountain pens. Rolled gold has about 100 times more gold than gold plated items.
CONDITION:
The book measures 8.5cm x 12cm.
There are various signs of age, use and wear. The cover has discoloured with age, some slight scuffs and minor scratches are noticeable on close inspection. The boards are a thicker material than the spine, binding is holding well. The cloth hinges are discoloured with some foxing spots. The rolled gold sections have worn in parts, the corners in particular are well rubbed at the extremities. All sections firmly attached to the boards. Cream silk moiré end papers and paste downs, a little frayed and bumped. Previous owner ink inscription on first blank end paper. Text block good, binding tight, no further notes or inscriptions. Pages a little yellowed/toned with age. One cream ribbon page marker, worn/frayed. Page edges red under gold gilt, a little dulled and scratched from handling.
Overall remains in good reading condition, showing its age in places but generally a nice little edition. Uncommonly found with the Rolled Gold additions.
