The book measures 9cm x 13cm.
There are various signs of age, use and wear. The unique binding is constructed of cut portions of mother of pearl, fixed together in a central panel, surrounded with a bevelled edge. The assembled boards have then been beautifully engraved with an etched floral leaf design. Both front and rear boards are matching. All mother of pearl sections are present and in generally good condition. The bevelled edges help the light refract from the iridescent colours of the mother of pearl. The rear panel has a small cracked corner at the top right edge, although still held firmly in place. A similar section is also present on the left edge half way down, also held firmly in place. There is some mild discolouration and marks across the surface in general, this does not significantly distract from the overall beauty. The boards top, bottom and outer edge are brass edged, and joined with a brass clasp. There is some surface discolouration or patina of the brass, it remains firm and secure, brass clasp in good working order. There is 'Barritt & Co' engraved on the underside of the clasp.
The spine is light brown leather, with 5 slightly raised gilt ribs, gilt title, and 5 floral gilt stamps between each rib. The gilding remains bright, the leather is showing some wear, top and bottom edge noticeably rubbed. Page edges are gold gilded, some scratching and wear noticeable.
The yellow end pages and paste downs are a little marked. Noticeable patina to the brass edging along the inside boards. Overall contents is toned, yellowed slightly with age, some mild foxing spots dotted throughout. Overall the contents remains in very good reading condition, no loose or missing pages, no previous owner inscriptions, highlighting or notes. Text block is firm. Two blue ribbon page markers present, but in delicate and worn condition.
Overall the book remains in remarkable condition for being almost 170 years old. A beautiful and rare binding, would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please do expect as described signs of age, use and wear.
